Meet Claire Hess

"I sit before flowers hoping they will train me in the art of opening up. I stand on mountain tops believing that avalanches will teach me to let go. I know nothing, but I am here to learn. - Shane Koyczan."

I believe that the transformation of our mind, body, and spirit is connected through yoga. Each key element plays an integral part in our well-being as well as how we are able to function in an ever-changing society. Yoga is more than just physical asana, but also a philosophy of how we can integrate elements of character that serve a greater good.

When did yoga find you?

Yoga found me during the fall semester of my junior year of undergrad.

I was first introduced to yoga when seeking a physical activity that would alleviate stress on my joints from years of sports. After coming back from shoulder surgery yoga ultimately helped me regain range of motion as well as reduce scar tissue. The journey to be able to practice asana was long, but it taught me more than just how to look pretty in a physical pose. It taught me how to breathe through the process and to be able to work with my ever-changing body on a daily basis. Our bodies are constantly evolving and to be able to recognize these changes allows us to stay safe in our practice.

  1. I practice yoga because it allows me the time and opportunity to fully be in my body and focus on awareness.
  2. Yoga has changed me off the mat because it has encouraged my mind/body connection and has served as a way for me to practice forwards kindness to myself which then translates into every other aspect in my life.
  3. The asana classes that I teach are empowering and are routed in Ashtanga and Vinyasa.
  4. When I am not teaching yoga, you can find me either spending time outdoors riding my mountain bike, kayaking, running, working on art projects or working as a project manager at  Sunnyside Millwork :)
  5. What drives me wild - There are several things that light me up, but one of the constants is always knowledge and being a constant student. I avidly yearning to learn more from life, situations and people, because I want to give back to my community and pass on those teachings to others.
